What is drain tracing ?
Drain tracing and mapping is creating a map of the underground drainage system layout. How does drain tracing work ?
Drain tracing uses a multi- frequency digital locator and is often used together with CCTV to determine the path of underground drain pipes. An Underground sonde carried by a high pressure water jetting hose or CCTV into the pipe to be traced, emits a high frequency signal to the operator’s receiver at ground level.
A pulse signal from the sonde is sent in a circular or arch configuration and adjusted to indicate the pipe location and depth. Drain tracing dyes help to confirm connections from toilets, baths showers and sinks.
Using this equipment in conjunction with CCTV allows us to get an accurate view of what is going on below ground and helps keep repair costs to a minimum. Excavation is expensive, drain tracing takes the guesswork out of where you dig.

If your drains will not unblock the next step depends on the system layout and where the blockage is. It may be that a CCTV survey is needed, it could also be that CCTV would not work and a drain trace is the best way foreward to help with the drain repair.
I have moved house do I need to have the drains traced ?
If you have moved house it may from what you can see from just lifting manhole covers be obvious where the drains run. It may be you have been provided with a plan showing drain runs and connections, these are often available after extensions are built. Provided the plan is accurate it should give you the information you need. Whether or not you need a drain trace depends on why you are reading this. If you have a blocked drain which clears and stays clear and there are no other issues, theres probably no point in tracing the drains unless you want to know where they run in case there are problems in the future.

What is the difference between drain tracing and a CCTV survey ?
Drain tracing establishes the route of a pipe, a CCTV survey looks inside the pipe to find blockages, cracks, roots and sees the general condition of the system. The two services are often confused. They often work well together, that way if a problem such as root ingress is found by CCTV and the trace is being used simultaneously, the above ground position of the problem can be marked.
